Quitting your job can be a nerve racking and daunting experience. Whilst there may be a temptation to tell your manager what you really think of them, it is important to handle your resignation in a professional manner. You never know, one day you might need a reference from this company and it is always advisable to leave on good terms.

Our tips for quitting include:

- Be absolutely clear as to why you want to leave. It may be that you want to change your role within your current employer.

- Prepare your resignation speech and review your employment contract beforehand so that you know your notice period.

- In many sales and client orientated positions, it is fairly common for a resignation to be effective immediately, particularly if your next role is with a competitor. Be prepared for this event.

- Be absolutely certain that you definitely want to quit. Saying the words 'I resign' can be difficult to take back and can affect future working relationships.

- If salary is a factor in your resignation, think about how you would react if your boss offers you an increase to entice you to stay.

- Ensure you have some positive things to say about your time at the company.

- Don't just blurt out your resignation in the middle of the open plan office. Approach your manager and have a confidential discussion.

- Be prepared for an exit interview. Think about the message you would like to leave behind.
